Interior Ministry denounces campaign to undermine relations with DRCongo

The Interior Minister considered that a campaign is underway to “undermine and hinder” relations between Angola and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRCongo), denying the involvement of Angolan military personnel in the death of a Congolese woman.

Eugénio Laborinho, who was speaking at the end of the meeting of the Joint Defense and Security Commission Angola-DRCongo, on Wednesday, reacted to the information circulated on social media about a video in which the military executed a woman.

The official, quoted in the Jornal de Angola, rejected any connection of Angolan soldiers to the images, stressing that the case occurred in Mozambique and that having registered in the Angolan territory, the authorities would have taken "the appropriate measures".

The video shows a naked woman being chased and executed by men in uniform, allegedly on a road in Cabo Delgado (Mozambique). The Mozambican government rejected the fact that it was men in its army who carried out the murder, claiming that it is propaganda by terrorists who have put that northern territory in shock, causing hundreds of victims.

Regarding incidents recorded at the border, Eugénio Laborinho assured that they are out of date, adding that "there was a moment of tension at the time, but, based on dialogue and cooperation relations with DRCongo, the governor of Lunda Norte established contacts with his counterpart and the commander of the 3rd military region and the Congolese authorities took disciplinary and criminal measures ".

"There have been mutual efforts to prevent these occurrences from recurring," said the minister.

Eugénio Laborinho defended the urgent need for the rehabilitation and replacement of border marks along the border between Angola and DRCongo, an issue that has been analyzed for more than 10 years.

According to the minister, the climatic and geographical conditions, the location of the posts and difficulties in the access roads to the border posts, are the main constraints for the replacement of the border marks.

The official said that a group of experts and experts from the joint commission is in charge of updating all the information for restoring border demarcations.

In 2014, the then head of diplomacy, Georges Chikoti, defended that, in all border points where there are problems of this kind, they would resort to the borders drawn by the French and Portuguese.

"As there are points that are not very clear, on our maps and that of Congo, we will find a solution that allows experts from both countries to cross the entire border and establish a line accepted by all parties," he said at the time, Georges Chikoti, current secretary general of the Africa, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) group.

With regard to illegal immigration, Eugénio Laborinho recognized that it is a difficult phenomenon to permanently eradicate, however, it can be minimized with the adoption of concrete preventive measures.

The meeting was attended by the Angolan Interior Minister and his counterpart from DRCongo, Gilbert Kankonde, as well as other Angolan ministers and the executive and the Congolese delegation.
