National Police spokesperson Deputy Commissioner Mateus Rodrigues presented to the press the status of the last 48 hours of the taxi service shutdown in Luanda province, marked by acts of looting and vandalism, which is expected to end on Wednesday.

This death brings to five the number of deaths already reported by the National Police following two days of protests against rising fuel prices and public transportation fares.

According to Mateus Rodrigues, the public security situation in the capital is considered stable, with some incidents recorded on Monday, including acts of looting of commercial establishments and violence.

"Today [Tuesday] our forces were much more alert, much closer to the incidents, and these acts were forcefully suppressed, which allowed order to be practically restored by around 4 pm," he said.

Mateus Rodrigues also highlighted the record of some incidents in the provinces of Huambo and Icolo e Bengo, but assured that the situation is now under control.

Regarding the damage, the officer highlighted a National Police vehicle that crashed into a wall in Viana, resulting in minor injuries to officers.

Throughout the night, the police would maintain security measures, and in some cases, intensify them, emphasizing that the intention of the citizens involved "is solely to loot commercial establishments."

"Their modus operandi is to place barricades on roads and set tires on fire to impede traffic, and then vandalize and loot commercial establishments," he said.

The police will intensify and reinforce protection for commercial establishments in Luanda, Icolo e Bengo, and other provinces, "to prevent the incidents reported from happening again," he said.
