International climbing festival takes place for the first time in Huíla

Next month, Serra da Leba, in Huíla, will be the backdrop for an international climbing festival. In an initiative by Climb Angola, in collaboration with the Association of Tour Promoters and Operators (HOTOUR), the first Climbing Festival in Angola will take place between the 16th and 25th of August.

Being among the new features on the calendar of the Festivities of the Nossa Senhora do Monte, this festival, to be hosted for the first time by Huíla, will feature the presence of 30 professionals of this modality, coming from South Africa, Namibia and also from countries in northern Europe and South America, writes Angop.

According to João Lopes, HOTOUR representative in Huíla, the festival is promoted by two "excellent" climbers. They are an Englishman and an American who live in Angola and invited athletes from some parts of the world.

The person in charge explained that the two climbers traveled around the country and identified potential areas to practice climbing, and after passing through Malanje and Huambo, they chose Huíla because they believe it has "unique conditions".

"They traveled around Angola and identified areas with potential for practicing the sport, having been to Malanje, Pedras Negras from Pungo to Ndongo, as well as Morro do Moco, in Huambo, but the choice for the debut fell on the cliffs of Serra da Leba, where they believe there are unique conditions", he said, quoted by Angop.

The official also said that lovers of this sport will have the opportunity to participate in climbing, guided by professionals, as the organizers plan to establish a school in Lubango, in a social initiative, intending to give communities and interested parties the opportunity to learn and practice.

There will be a nine-day festival, which will feature activities such as "climbing, route development, slacklining, as well as a bolting workshop, film screenings and much more", says the event's website.

The festival will take place on the cliffs of Serra da Leba, and is open to "climbers of all levels".

According to the event website, participants will be able to camp, as an area will be available for this. "We will have camping available at the festival site. The camping area is a five-minute walk from the climbing area. We will have showers and bathrooms available," the website reads.

However, those who prefer to stay in a hotel can also do so, with the organizers recommending booking in Lubango, as it is 45 minutes from the festival site.

In terms of prices, the ticket costs 300 thousand kwanzas and already includes "camping, all food and meals and the event t-shirt". However, they also have a shorter three-day ticket "available for 80 thousand kwanzas for the second weekend, from 23 to 25 August".

The organization also informs that Angolans have a 50 percent discount on any of the tickets.

In addition to all these activities, João Lopes, quoted by Angop, also said that the event will also feature the participation of international chef Eduardo Cassoli.

Registration for the festival is open until the end of this month. You can find out more or sign up here.
