Passenger coming from Angola intercepted at Porto airport with 62,600 cigarettes

A passenger from Angola was intercepted at Francisco Sá Carneiro airport in possession of 62,600 cigarettes concealed in four pieces of luggage, the Tax and Customs Authority (AT) revealed in a statement this Tuesday.

The detection of illicit cigarette traffic was carried out by customs officials, through inspection and control techniques developed by the AT, in order to strengthen the capacities to fulfill its mission, in terms of combating the practice of illicit acts, protection of society and public health, says the press release.

"The action in question made it possible to avoid the loss of thousands of euros, in terms of customs duties, VAT and tobacco tax", points out the AT.

Under current legislation, the Pall Mall branded cigarettes were seized and will be subject to destruction under customs control, the statement said.
