Mbanza Kongo celebrates third anniversary as World Cultural Heritage

This Wednesday, July 8, marks the third anniversary since the elevation of the historic center of Mbanza Kongo to World Cultural Heritage.

:

The secular Angolan city, located in the province of Zaire, was registered by the Government as Cultural Heritage of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the first being validated in the country by that organization.

In a statement sent to VerAngola, the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Environment states that the rise of Mbanza Kongo was based on its strong economic potential and unique natural beauty, thus opening up a great challenge to authorities and investors in transforming the region into a mandatory tourist destination, to capitalize on the existing historical-cultural wealth.

Noteworthy are the Museum of the Kings of Kongo, Nkulumbimbi, the old Traditional Court, the Yala Nkuw tree, the Ruins of the Cathedral, the first Church of Angola built in 1941, the Cave of Nzau Evua among other attributes.

To mark the date, the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Environment will carry out some activities online, due to the social context that the country and the rest of the world faces taking into account the pandemic of the covid-19.

The program of events includes scripts, televised debates and various programs that aim to increase citizens' knowledge about the value of the secular city of Mbanza Kongo.

The program will begin with an official speech, to be given by the Minister of Culture, Tourism and Environment, Adjany Costa, focusing on the advances made since 2017.
