According to a statement from the independence movement, the attacks by the Angolan military against "unarmed Cabindan civilians" took place on Monday night and this morning, in the border region of Tando Zinze and resulted in the death of seven people, with another four missing.
FLEC-FAC calls, in the same statement, on the European Union (EU) to join the efforts of the African Union (AU) "to find a fair and peaceful solution to the Cabindan conflict".
"The unjust war imposed on the Cabindan people by Angola continues to cause suffering and loss of human life and must be denounced by the international community", highlights the group, demanding "the protection of unarmed civilian populations".
"FLEC-FAC follows with great concern the series of premeditated murders and homicides perpetrated by the Angolan occupation authorities against unarmed Cabindan citizens, including torture (...) and sexual assaults that constitute a true declaration of war against the Cabindan people", the independentists also point out.
FLEC has been fighting for the independence of the territory, from where much of the country's oil comes, for several years, claiming that the enclave was a Portuguese protectorate – as established in the Treaty of Simulambuco, signed in 1885 – and not an integral part of the Angolan territory.
The Government normally refuses to recognize the existence of dead soldiers resulting from guerrilla actions by independence activists, or any situation of instability in that province in the north of the country, always affirming territorial unity.
