Portuguese legal defense association Propública will open a branch in Angola later this year

Propública, a private association whose objective is the legal defense of the public interest, is in "advanced" negotiations to create "a sister organization" in Angola later this year, its president told Lusa.

According to lawyer Agostinho Pereira de Miranda, the organization is "at the moment in conversations, which are advanced, about the establishment of a section of the Propública in Angola".

And "it will certainly be this year" that "this cooperation" will be established in Angola, and it may even be through "a sister organization of Propública" to be created, admitted the lawyer.

"We are in contact with lawyers, who are simultaneously social activists, and who, like us, want to live up to this motto of advancing societies and communities, but who are not constituted in association" in Angola, he revealed.

Speaking to Lusa about the announcement, and taking into account that this Friday marks the Day of the Lawyer and of the winners of the Nelson Mandela Prize, created by Propública, Agostinho de Miranda said that that organization has grown in number of members, almost 100, and is "increasingly involved in matters related to the basic interests of citizens and fundamental rights of citizenship".

"Recently, we started a process of denouncing the illegality that consists of imposing prior appointments for face-to-face attendance at public offices and we are continuing this process", he stressed.

According to the president of Propública, there has been "an excellent response", not only from society, but also, for example, from the Ombudsman's Office, regarding that process.

The head of the association also revealed that the association aims "to address the issue of instrumentalization" of the Portuguese courts "by unregulated international financial funds, which have been promoting litigation for the benefit of consumers, but with very clear deviations from the rules of the funding and equity in terms of harnessing these benefits".

As for those benefits, he argued: "They should only be for consumers and not for vulture funds, not for other actors who are taking advantage of a law that was ill-conceived."

This is "another of Propública's intervention fronts", said its president, adding: "As are human rights and citizenship rights corresponding to the exercise of democracy and fundamental freedoms, rights and guarantees, not only in Portugal, but also in other Portuguese-speaking countries".
