Cardio-Pulmonary Disease Complex implements “call center” and telemedicine

The Cardeal Dom Alexandre do Nascimento Hospital Complex for Cardio-Pulmonary Diseases will have a central call center at the end of this month, to allow remote consultations and improve communication with other health units in the country.

The initiative was announced by the director of the health unit, Carlos Alberto Masseca, when he spoke at the 13th Edition of CaféCIPRA on the “Problematics of Humanized Care in the Health Sector”, held at the Press Center of the Presidency of the Republic (CIPRA).

The new customer service also marks the beginning of telemedicine, to mainly monitor patients residing outside Luanda. “Not all patients are from Luanda, we need to continue to follow them from a distance,” he said.

To guarantee a good technical and humanized service to users, the Cardeal Dom Alexandre do Nascimento Hospital Complex for Cardio-Pulmonary Diseases has a complete building for training in different areas, such as cardiology, cardiac surgery, pulmonology, neurosurgery, imaging and intensive care, having already carried out around 2000 training actions in the last two years.

“Training covers all aspects that have to do with caring for people, technical aspects and what each person is responsible for”, said Carlos Masseca.

The director also announced the opening, 10 days ago, of the first specialization course in nursing in the National Health Service. The training, with 50 participants mostly internal, is part of the service improvement program.

For Carlos Masseca, the results of training technicians have been visible, and have allowed the hospital unit to perform 620 heart surgeries in two years, exceeding the average of previous years.

“When we look at this number, it seems like a small number, but I can use indicators specific to our country. The Ministry of Health, in previous years, already had a project that carried out around 100 to 120 surgeries per year. By the end of this year, we will be very close to what they did in ten years. In less than three years, we will be surpassing these numbers that were previously achieved,” he explained.

According to Carlos Masseca, the area of neurosurgery is providing a response of almost 95 percent, with 440 surgeries already carried out. In terms of intensive care, the Hospital Complex is the only unit that provides neurocritical care.

The placement of a 'pacemarker' in the heart, commonly known as a 'stack', the performance of cardiac catheterizations, bronchoscopies and biopsies guided by ultrasound are some unique and highly complex procedures carried out in the hospital unit and highlighted by Carlos Masseca.

“There is a set of procedures that were carried out in the private sector or abroad, which are now carried out in the National Health Service (…). And when we respond to the population’s major problems, we are also humanizing the provision of services”, concluded the person in charge.
