Government spent 21 percent less on purchasing fuel in the first quarter

The Government spent US$769 million on purchasing fuel in the first quarter, 21 percent less than in the last three months of last year, said the person responsible for the sector.

The general director of the Petroleum Derivatives Regulatory Institute (IRD), Luís Fernandes, detailed that 1.2 million metric tons of fuel were purchased, of which diesel represented 51.3 percent, gasoline 35.5 percent , fuel oil 7.7 percent, JET A1 (aircraft fuel) 4.5 percent, illuminating oil 0.7 percent and asphalt 0.3 percent.

This official, who presented the balance of activities in the petroleum derivatives sector from January to March this year, said that 73 percent of the fuels were imported and the remainder purchased at the Luanda and Cabinda Gulf Refineries.

Luís Fernandes highlighted that in the first period under analysis the country had a liquid fuel storage capacity on land of 675,968 cubic meters.

With regard to fuel stations, the official said that in the first three months of the year, 1,165 were recorded in the country, but of these, less than 80 percent are operational.

“In terms of market share in terms of sales volume, Sonangol Distribuição e Comercialização maintains the leadership with 63.9 percent, followed by Pumangol with 20.8 percent, Total Energies Marketing Angola with 7.1 percent, Sonangalp with 7 percent and Etu Energies with 1.2 percent,” he said.

Regarding gaseous fuels, the Government purchased 114,118 metric tons of cooking gas on the domestic market, of which 60 percent came from Fábrica Angola LNG, 32 percent from Sanha, 6 percent from the Luanda Refinery and 2 percent from Topping de Cabinda Gulf, an increase of approximately 15 percent compared to the previous quarter.

The provinces that consumed the most cooking gas were Luanda with 52.7 percent, Benguela 11.9 percent, Huíla, 7.4 percent, Huambo 5.8 percent and Cabinda with 6.8 percent, totaling 81 percent of national consumption.
