Applications open for National Literacy Award to recognize contributions to combating illiteracy

Applications are now open for the National Literacy Award, which aims to recognize those who make a significant contribution to combating illiteracy in the country. Taking place until August 31st, registrations can be made by both individuals and legal entities, and the winners will be announced in September.

The Government, through a statement to which VerAngola had access, explains that "individuals and legal entities that stand out in the literacy and education of young people and adults, through innovation, creativity, sustainability or impact of the results achieved, can apply for the National Literacy Award '22 de Novembro'", which was established by the Ministry of Education, has been in force since 19 March, having been approved by Executive Decree No. 371/25 and being of a social and symbolic nature.

Thus, the objective of the award is to "publicly honor those who contribute significantly to the fight against illiteracy in Angola, promote literacy and implement best practices and initiatives in this area."

The prize is open to individuals and legal entities, both national and foreign, who are 18 years of age or older.

"Registrations are open to individuals and legal entities, national or foreign, aged 18 or over, belonging to the public, public-private or private sector", says the statement.

According to the government's note, the award's regulations include "modalities such as teaching activities in the area of ​​literacy and education for young people and adults, studies, research and investigations on the subject, carried out or published during the award's reference period", as well as "support in mobilizing resources and creating material and human conditions to increase the non-formal offer of literacy and education for young people and adults in the community".

"In addition, the award covers several categories, including youth and adult education, recovery of school delays and universalization of primary education," says the note.

In this sense, interested parties can submit their application until "August 31 of each year", to the secretariat of the Jury of the National Literacy Award, located in the National Directorate of Youth and Adult Education of the Ministry of Education.

Registrations, says the statement, can be made individually or "through the provincial Education offices and secretariats".

The announcement of the winners is scheduled for September 8, on the occasion of International Literacy Day, "through the media and institutional platforms of the Ministry of Education".

"The award ceremony will take place at a formal and public event, during the National Literacy Award Gala, which will preferably take place on November 22. If necessary, the ceremony may be scheduled for another date", explains the Government.

The award jury will be made up of five members chosen "for their suitability, credibility, competence and experience in the area of ​​literacy", who will be responsible for evaluating and selecting the winners.

"The prize will be awarded annually, with the first place winner receiving 50 percent of the total prize value, the second 30 percent and the third 20 percent, accompanied by a diploma of recognition," reads the note, which adds that the ministerial department responsible for Education "approves the value of the prize annually and publishes the monetary values ​​corresponding to the financial support granted to the winners."

According to the statement, the "financial costs of the award will be borne by the budget of the Ministry of Education, in accordance with article 30 of Law No. 15/10, of July 14, of the General State Budget and the Annual Rules for the Execution of the OGE", and the award "may also count on the support of benefactors and sponsors, upon express declaration from them".
