Five suspects of ivory trafficking arrested in Angola, one of them also for murder

Angolan authorities have arrested a group of five people for trafficking more than 20 kilograms of ivory, including a suspected murderer, in Luanda, the Criminal Investigation Service (SIC) reported this Tuesday.

According to the SIC spokesperson, Manuel Halaiwa, the detainees, aged between 21 and 37, are suspected of ivory trafficking crimes and one of them is also suspected of qualified homicide due to means.

Manuel Halaiwa said that the individuals committed various crimes in the Cassequel do Buraco and Catinton neighborhoods, in the Maianga district, Luanda municipality, the youngest being 21 years old, suspected of the death of a 67-year-old man, retired from the Angolan Armed Forces (FAA), in December 2022, in the Catinton neighborhood.

The SIC spokesperson pointed out that the victim was stabbed in the abdomen during a robbery at his residence for the theft of a motorbike.

The official added that, with regard to ivory trafficking, the SIC seized a total of 21.14 kilograms of already worked ivory in the group's possession, in spherical shape and rings, which, according to information obtained, would be delivered to a citizen of chinese for sale.

"The citizens now detained were present at the Public Prosecutor's Office, which applied the most serious coercive measure to the murderer and the others are awaiting further procedural steps", informed Manuel Halaiwa.
