War in Ukraine could threaten grain imports to Angola

Those responsible for the bakery sector fear the effects of the conflict in Ukraine, which could translate into a threat to cereal imports to Angola, which, due to lack of national production, is dependent on wheat from abroad.

According to Gilberto Simão, president of the Angolan Bakery and Pastry Industries Association, the repercussions of the war in that European country are already being felt in the market, as wheat imports are already beginning to be limited.

However, the official, quoted by the RFI, admitted that this armed conflict can be seen as an opportunity for the country to bet on national production and thus reduce import levels of this raw material.

"There are countries like Russia and Ukraine, which are at war, which produce cereals, they are already limiting and some are banning the export of cereals. Now, political will is needed to bet on national production. In colonial times, 40 percent percent of wheat flour was produced in Angola, so we have an opportunity there for us to regain our wheat production", said Gilberto Simão.

The country, according to the association, has four mills. However, the organization considers that nothing guarantees that they have enough reserves to cover the entire country in a period of crisis, writes RFI.

Thus, he defends the creation, by the Government, of conditions to support national producers.

"If we import 100 percent of these products, we have a sovereign opportunity here to start replacing imports, at least in 30 or 40 percent of this product", reiterated the association's president.
