Unitel admits “malicious action” on its network and has no immediate solution

Unitel admitted that a “malicious action” will be at the origin of the “disturbances” in its network, recorded six times in less than a month, assuming it still has no horizon for immediate resolution.

:

"Disturbances" in the operator's network, especially in voice and SMS services, have occurred since 17 February, an "incident" also occurred on 26 and 27 February, 5, 10 and 11 March, as acknowledged by the company.

"At the moment, Unitel's major suppliers in the 3G network, namely the main European infrastructure provider and an American supplier, are supporting the finding of the origin and correcting the problem", said, in a press conference, the director -general of the operator, Miguel Geraldes.

The official, who was speaking in Luanda, about the sequence of "disturbances" that have been affecting his services, admitted the existence of "malicious action" in his network.

"Although unlikely, since Unitel has a sufficiently secure network, the possibility of malicious action is not ruled out for now", he stressed.

"There is a perception that Unitel had an attack, but we are not aware that we have had a 'hacker' or an attack", he assured.
At least three "disturbances" in the operator's network were recorded this March, in the early hours of the day, as Miguel Geraldes recalled, regretting the situation.

According to the director general of Unitel, several 'software' have already been installed, following the "anomalies" recorded, especially in the 3G network, but despite the efforts made so far, the operator has not detected the cause of the problem.

"Our suppliers are engaged with our team, they are working 24 hours a day, but unfortunately to date we have not been able to verify the origin, because what is happening in the network are erratic impacts and we have not yet been able to detect the origin of this impact", he stressed.

Some foreign technicians, assigned to the operator's suppliers, are on their way to Angola to assess the origin and resolution of the problem that Unitel has been facing in recent days.

"Nevertheless, I cannot say at the moment how long we will reach this objective. Let's hope it will be as little as possible, but I would say very likely during the next week", he pointed out.

"This means that during the weekend and next week there may be interruptions in the voice and SMS service, but in the data service there are no problems because it is processed in a very fluid way", he stressed.

Miguel Geraldes reiterated that a "malicious action" may be behind the current "anomalies" that the operator registers, arguing that it "may not even have been done intentionally".

"There may have been an erratic configuration on the network and we still can't find that situation," he said.

Unitel, which has had a team on high alert since 17 February, ensures that it has already operated the compensation of more than 719 customers affected by the aforementioned disturbances.

The director general of the telecommunications operator also noted that in the last two years the company has invested around 150 billion kwanzas.
