Justice commits to listening to more “cries and suggestions” from citizens

The president of the Supreme Court said this Tuesday, in the province of Huambo, that the judicial year of 2022 will be marked by a greater hearing of “the cries and suggestions of citizens”.

Joel Leonardo was speaking at the opening of the judicial year, which was attended by the President, João Lourenço, who was responsible for the opening speech.

According to the president of the Supreme Court, in this judicial year, citizen support offices will work together with the courts, a structure created under the recent Law on Judicial and Administrative Secretariats, "which comes at an opportune time".

"We need to hear more from citizens, almost daily we receive numerous complaints about the long delays in court proceedings, namely cases of dismissal of workers, cases relating to land disputes, disputes over urban buildings, extinction of commercial companies, exclusion of partners, court of accounts, divorces and evictions stopped, slowness in the attribution of food to minors", among others, he said.

The president of the Supreme Court also underlined the delay in the processing of precautionary measures, which, by law, should take place urgently, but also "they go to sleep for a long time".

"This year, we are going to try to listen more to citizens, to listen more to lawyers, to listen more to our own employees, in short, to listen more", he guaranteed.

Supreme Court officials have been on strike for a week to demand equal pay with colleagues from the other higher courts.

Joel Leonardo stressed that "it is not enough to listen", it is also necessary to act, "make the process go ahead", to avoid situations that lead to justice in their own hands, "all caused by the frustration that can take hold of the citizen, desperate for the long delay for the outcome of your case".

From the executive, Joel Leonardo thanked the support that has been provided for the possible accommodation of magistrates and judicial employees, aiming to improve the work environment, to encourage them to imprint greater dynamism and responsiveness in the handling of files.

The president of the Supreme Court also expressed concern about the recently "discredited" salary reduction of the judges, taking into account that "the judiciary is one of the only jobs in which, by law, the professional is prohibited from performing commercial acts ", also remembering that judicial magistrates spend most of their judicial life prevented from exercising any profitable activity, which is linked to their independence, not only in actions, but also financially.

"So that the judge or court official at the end of the day does not depend on extraneous impulses to overcome the consequences arising from the lifetime ban", he emphasized.
