Public prosecutors threaten to paralyze from March 21

Prosecutors of the Public Ministry threatened this Wednesday to paralyze work activities from March 21 in protest against “precarious socio-labor conditions and the silence of employers”, although they expressed openness to dialogue.

According to the president of the National Union of Magistrates of the Public Ministry (SNMMP), José Buanga, the decision to proceed with a strike for a period of ten days, between 21 March and 1 April 2022, was deliberated in an extraordinary meeting in October 2021 and will be fulfilled if the guardianship meets the requests.

"There is, in fact, the intention of the magistrates, through the union, to paralyze work during this period, in the form of a protest and not a strike, because our statute does not allow us to go on strike", said this Wednesday José Buanga in an interview with Lusa.

The appalling working conditions, restrictions on their rights and benefits are among the demands of the Angolan magistrates, who also regret the silence of the president of the Superior Council for the Judiciary of the Public Prosecutor's Office in the face of the letters sent.

The letters about the "grievous conditions" in which the magistrates work, explained the president of the SNMMP, were sent with the knowledge of the executive and the National Assembly.

"Letters, where we also point out possible solutions, which unfortunately to our displeasure have not had any response to date," he said.

"And in the face of this, we must take this stoppage to heart, but say that the union leadership is open to possible negotiations with the authorities with competence to do so", he noted.

The strike, as José Buanga observes, "is basically the last resort we have to clearly show how blatant the lack of communication and attention of our judiciary towards us has been".

The SNMMP, in a statement to affiliates, dated March 5, 2022, and which Lusa had access to this Wednesday, emphasizes that the said strike "does not have a strike character, so affiliates are urged to present in their respective workplaces, and must not, however, perform any act related to their work activity".

In July 2021, public prosecutors promoted demonstrations across the country where they denounced their discontent as a result of socio-professional "bad conditions".
