Trial of Angolan and Brazilian bishops and pastors of the UCKG may begin this month

The new leader of the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God in Angola said this Monday that Angolan and Brazilian bishops and pastors, accused of various crimes, including currency evasion, vasectomy, may go on trial later this month.

The information was advanced by Bishop Valente Bezerra Luis, since February the new leader of IURD Angola, after disagreements between church members began in November 2019.

At stake are disagreements between Angolan and Brazilian pastors and bishops over the management of the UURD and complaints of humiliation, racial discrimination and economic crimes, which led to separation into wings of the church, with the Angolan part having created a Reform Commission, legitimized in a general assembly and recognized, in December 2020, by the Angolan authorities.

"In a few days, this case will go to trial, our lawyers have already told us that even this month the case may go to court," said Valente Bezerra Luís, speaking to Radio Nacional de Angola, on the sidelines of an act promoted by the church to mark International Women's Day.

Valente Bezerra Luís did not know the number of people involved in the case, confirming only that there are Angolans and Brazilians.

Tensions worsened in June 2020 with the seizure of temples by the reformist commission, meanwhile, constituted in a Reform Commission of Angolan Pastors, led by Bishop Valente Bezerra Luís.

The case merited in July 2020 a meeting between the Minister of Justice and Human Rights of Angola and deputies, in the National Assembly, and the ruler announced the existence of at least two ongoing processes due to the problem.

Francisco Queiroz, on that occasion, distanced the internal discord from any political fact, pointing out that 300 Angolan pastors had made a public complaint, accusing the Brazilian part of the church, with origin in Brazil, founded by Edir Macedo, of crimes of tax evasion, money laundering and racism, and that the church's management had also filed complaints against the dissidents.
