Cholera continues to spread in Angola and now exceeds 2000 cases

Cholera cases continue to rise in Angola and now total 2,069 cases, with 181 more patients identified in the last 24 hours, the highest number ever since the outbreak began on January 7.

According to the Ministry of Health's epidemiological bulletin, the 181 cases were reported in Bengo (103), Luanda (62), Icolo e Bengo (14) and Huíla (two).

In the last 24 hours, five deaths were also recorded, increasing the total number of deaths to 70, 40 of which were in the province of Luanda, the epicenter of the disease.

The most affected age group is 2 to 5 years old, with 322 cases and 10 deaths, followed by the age group 10 to 14 years old, with 279 cases and five deaths.

Since the beginning of the outbreak, a cumulative total of 2069 cases have been reported, with 1124 in Luanda province, 634 in Bengo province, 294 in Icolo and Bengo province, four in Huambo province, four in Malanje province, four in Zaire province, four in Huíla province and one in Cuanza Norte province, with ages ranging from 2 to 100 years.

The Government began a vaccination campaign on Monday that covers almost one million Angolans to try to contain the spread of the disease.
