Production of honey and mushrooms in Huíla has funding from the European Union

A program to encourage the production of honey and mushrooms, on a large scale, in the province of Huíla has funding from the European Union (EU). The action is budgeted at more than one million euros and aims to strengthen the economic and food capacity of families.

:

The initiative, which began to be financed this month, is valued at 1,332,852 euros. Of this amount, 90 percent will be supported by the EU, through the Camões Institute, as part of the Program for Strengthening the Resilience of Food and Nutrition Security in Angola (FRESAN), which is being carried out by ADRA and which will be responsible for supporting the remaining 10 percent.

The project, called 'Ehole', will be implemented in the districts of Chibia, Humpata and Gambos and will cover a total of 5381 people, writes Angop.

The execution of the program will be supervised by ISCED in Lubango, Instituto Politécnico Tundavala, in Huíla and the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences in Huambo.

Anivaldo Pena, project coordinator, explained that this production is just one element of the program, being focused on improving life in agro-pastoral communities.

The official, quoted by Angop, explained that the program also provides for rural research with a view to expanding the fields of mushroom honey production, in the laboratory, with a view to generating greenhouse conditions to stimulate production.

He explained that mushrooms are only exploited in the rainy season and with laboratory cultivation it will be possible to have a more regular production: "The mushroom is a product that already exists, but only exploited in periods of rain, what we want is to do with production to be regular and scheduled".
