President of the Lunda Tchokwe Protected Movement detained

The president of the Portuguese Protectorate Movement of Lunda Tchokwe, José Mateus Zecamutchima, was arrested this Tuesday, his lawyer Salvador Freire told Lusa.

:

"He was detained in the Criminal Investigation Service," he said.

According to Salvador Freire, Zecamutchima was called to make a statement and the lawyer demanded that he be notified.

"It was difficult to pass the notification of the arrest, only at that time was it made known to us that there was an arrest warrant issued by the Lunda Norte Prosecutor," he told Lusa.

Salvador Freire said Zecamutchima is accused of the crimes of rebellion and association of wrongdoers.

Declaring himself "surprised," the lawyer said he is "doing everything to drop the crimes" listed in the warrant.

On January 30, according to police, some 300 people linked to the Portuguese Protectorate Movement Lunda Tchokwe (MPPLT), which for years has defended the autonomy of that region, tried to invade a police station, forcing the forces of order to defend themselves, causing six deaths,

The police version is contradicted by MPPLT leaders, opposition political parties and local civil society, who speak of at least 25 deaths and claim that it was an attempt to demonstrate, previously reported to the authorities, and that the demonstrators were unarmed.

The Lunda Tchokwe Protected Movement fights for autonomy in the Lundas region, in the East-North part of the country.

The autonomy of the diamond-rich Lunda region (Lunda Norte and Lunda Sul) is claimed by this movement, which is based on a Protectorate Agreement between Lunda-Tchokwe natives and Portugal in 1885 and 1894 that would give the territory an internationally recognized status.

Portugal would have ignored the kingdom's condition when it negotiated Angola's independence between 1974 and 1975 only with the liberation movements, according to the movement.
