Located in the upper part of the city of Huambo, this square was built between 1935 and 1940 and was not always named after the country's first President.
At the time of its construction, it was named Doutor Manuel de Arriaga, and housed a statue of Norton de Matos (creator of the city of Huambo). While in the post-independence period (1975/1976), the square was again named: Largo 11 de Novembro.
During the armed conflict (1993-2002), this square ended up being affected, having undergone reconstruction in 2006, when it was named Doutor António Agostinho Neto and now has a bronze monument of the country's first President.
