Eighteen sailors rescued after shipwreck in Namibe province

At least 18 sailors were rescued alive in Namibe province after their vessel sank while returning from fishing, and local authorities are investigating the reasons for the incident, local sources said Wednesday.

According to the head of Maritime Security at the Namibe Port Captaincy, Albino Yongombe, despite the fact that the 18 sailors on board were rescued alive, an "inquiry" was opened to investigate the reasons for the shipwreck.

The official, quoted this Wednesday by Angolan public radio, announced that the referred wooden vessel left the shipyard last year, although the semi-annual inspection was not known.

"We have already asked the shipowner to present the document of the last climb [inspection] to the shipyard so that we can assess how long he was working and how long he should go up to the shipyard", Albino Yongombe.

The rescue took place, he explained, because the shipowner complied with safety parameters for navigation: "Due to interference, the VHF communication did not materialize, but it still managed to communicate with someone who was on land."
