117 carat diamond is Lulo mine's latest 'star'

The Lulo mine, in Luanda Norte, has stood out in the diamond sector for its high quality and large stones. This early 2020 was equally fruitful again when it unveiled a 117 carat diamond.

The exploration project, which brings together Australians from the Lucapa Diamond Company (LDC), state-owned Endiama and Rosas & Pétalas, has proved to be one of the most successful in the area, with the Lulo mine already counting 14 diamonds with more 100 carats in the curriculum. Among them is the largest diamond produced in the country, discovered in 2016 with 404 carats and sold for 16 million dollars.

The latest statement from LDC reports the discovery of a stone in exactly the same location - block 19 - that falls under the 'Specials' category, which features diamonds over 10.8 carats.

“The recovery of this 117-carat, gem-quality diamond represents a positive start for Lulo in 2020 as we continue to implement our plans to increase both production and revenue this new year”, said Stephen Wetherall, managing director of LDC in a statement to which VerAngola had access.

Still to be discovered is the kimberlite that will be the origin of all the giant stones found in Lulo. One study points to a minimum of 80,000 carats still deposited in this Lunda Norte mine.
