UN forecasts economic recession of 1 percent in Angola this year and 1.5 percent growth in 2021

The United Nations (UN) anticipates that Angola will continue in recession this year, with negative growth of 1 percent, and begin to grow in 2021, with an expansion of 1.5 percent, according to a report released Wednesday.

Ampe Rogério/Lusa:

According to the report on the World Economic Outlook, released this Wednesday in New York, the UN estimates that the economy is facing its fifth consecutive year of economic recession, then returning to economic growth, seeing the economy expand by 1.5 percent.

"The economic situation in Southern Africa deteriorated in 2019, with several economies stagnating or in recession in a context of low investment, power shortages, high unemployment and a catastrophic climate", reads the document, which states that these Southern African economies should have grown 0.3 percent in 2019 and should accelerate to 0.9 percent this year and 1.9 percent in 2021.

According to the report, the growth of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) per capita "should remain in negative territory this year" in this region.

In Angola, the region's largest economy after South Africa, "the recession is expected to continue this year in a context of continuous decline in production and difficulties in attracting foreign investment," the document points.

Thus, continues the UN, "in Angola GDP growth should only enter positive territory in 2021, but in per capita terms [division of economic growth by population growth] the country should continue to contract for the seventh consecutive year.
