Students return after teachers' strike. Luísa Grilo speaks about consensus

Minister Luísa Grilo visited several schools in Luanda this Monday to observe the resumption of classes after the teachers' strike. The holder of the Education portfolio guaranteed that SINPROF's three main points of claim will be met from next January, despite the fact that negotiations have not yet ended.

The official stressed that of the 13 points presented by the union, ten have already been resolved. "There is consensus. We and SINPROF agree that the three points can start to be resolved from January. We have always said that we cannot solve all problems simultaneously", stated Luísa Grilo to RNA.

According to the Ministry of Education, the minister visited three different schools, where "where she found in loco the presence of students who are taking their first quarter tests and of the many teachers who are returning to work".

She also stated that the number of those present is satisfactory, taking into account that many students have already taken the exams, and are currently on break from school.

Luísa Grilo also found, at the Instituto Politécnico Alda Lara, that the tests carried out last week are already being corrected: "The students were evaluated. The school management is organized. I heard from the teachers that before the strike they already had the tests prepared. The tests were prepared by the coordinators, as it is important to emphasize. It was not the administrative ones. The tests were watched by everyone, including the teachers who did not join the strike, supported by some administrative employees", guaranteed the minister.

According to the director of the Industrial Polytechnic Institute of Luanda (IPIL), Milton Silva, the tests are taking place in order to prioritize students who did not take them previously, during the strike. To Jornal de Angola, the official informed that some classes, such as the 10th and 11th grades, were very affected by the teachers' strike.

"In principle, we scheduled it until the 23rd of the current month, but internally we also organized it so that the official calendar was revised, due to the range of disciplines that comprise the curricular plans. We will give priority to the scientific and technical components" , he stated.

Classes in public general education schools resumed this Monday – with first-quarter exams taking place – after almost two weeks of interregnum due to the second phase of the teachers' strike.

If there is no understanding with the ministry, SINPROF should advance to a third phase in January, to be decided in a teachers' assembly.
