The US-Africa Summit, to be held in the US capital between the 13th and 15th of this month, will be attended by the head of state, the presidency said in a statement.

The Angolan mission in the United States will participate in different moments of the summit over the four days, such as in the "Business Round Table organized by the United States Chamber of Commerce" and "a conference on global development issues promoted by the Exim Bank".

Angola is also participating in a central Business Forum "dedicated, essentially, to the future of US trade relations and investment in Africa, where President Joe Biden will speak".

The presidency also underlined in the press release that João Lourenço will also participate during his stay in Washington in a dinner hosted by the President of the United States on Wednesday.

João Lourenço will also hold "working meetings and audiences with businessmen and high finance and senior figures of the US Administration, such as Antony Blinken, Secretary of State".

The US will take advantage of the summit with African leaders to build capacity on the continent regarding the security threats facing Africa, official sources revealed this week.

In a press briefing, the US Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for African Affairs, Chidi Blyden, advanced on 7 December with some of the objectives of the Department of Defense for the US-Africa Summit, having indicated that the priorities are to "employ a whole government approach to empowering African partners to address the threats and security challenges we all face".

Among the threats and challenges highlighted by the undersecretary are political instability, violent conflicts, pandemics, food insecurity, democratic setbacks, climate change and environmental degradation.

At the Summit with African leaders, the US executive hopes to communicate his goals and partnership interests on the continent.

According to the undersecretary, the US is simultaneously trying to address mutual security challenges, protect its national security interests and support the objectives of African governments to deliver the necessary security dividends to prosper in the 21st century, so that Africa establish democratic institutions and advance economic opportunities.

The Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense stressed that the US has recalibrated its approach and will not only seek to empower the African continent in the field of security, development and governance, but also help it to deal with the factors of instability and conflict, to meet the "ambition of Africa".
