Government says it has a legal framework “sufficiently protective” of the environment

Angola has been working to increasingly position itself as an "environmentally friendly State" and its legal system appears to be "sufficiently protective of the environment", with rules that enshrine impositions and prohibitions of environmental crimes, it was announced last Thursday.

According to the Minister of State and Chief of Staff of the President, Adão de Almeida, the country has been working, as an active member of the international community, "to unequivocally position itself more and more as an environmentally friendly State".

"And that it honors its commitments towards environmental sustainability", said the official on Thursday at the opening of the 19th Meeting of Attorneys General of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP), which took place in Luanda.

The Angolan legal order, whether by domestic law nor by international law in force in Angola, underlined Adão de Almeida, appears to be "sufficiently protective of the environment".

To the extent that, he argued, it has legal rules that enshrine impositions and prohibitions which result in the unlawfulness of acts that do not comply with them".

Adão de Almeida also referred that it is up to the States to define environmental policies aimed at "the renewal and correct use of available natural resources as the first guarantee of the sustainable development of humanity and the improvement of the quality of life of citizens".

The "Role of the Public Ministry in Environmental Protection" was the motto of this meeting of Portuguese-speaking prosecutors, which lasted until Friday, in Luanda.

Energy conversion and climate change are current and central to our present and the future of humanity, he stressed.

"If we have the right and the duty to aspire more and more to economic growth and this right does not relieve us of the responsibility of not compromising the future of humanity", he maintained.

He also defended that creating synergies in the most different perspectives and also at the level of the CPLP States "is also relevant so that we can make an important contribution so that the right to the future is assured".

As for the Government's actions, within the framework of environmental sustainability, the Minister of State noted that the energy transition in the country, through the reduction in the use of fossil fuels, "is already a reality" in the country.

"In the province of Benguela alone, two large-capacity solar parks were recently inaugurated and similar projects are underway in several other provinces of the country", concluded Adão de Almeida.
