João Lourenço: “Youth is Angola's greatest asset”

The President of the Republic participated - by videoconference - in the second and last day of the ‘Africa Debate’ forum, where he interacted with former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, under the moderation of Guinean economist Carlos Lopes, in a panel dedicated to investment in Angola.

The leaders reflected on the progress of the reforms underway in Angola, at different levels, and presented their views on investment opportunities in the country.

On this matter, the head of state attributed the priority of reforms to promoting the private sector, with a view to converting it into an engine of economic growth in Angola. "We are working towards a real structural change in the Angolan economy, so that it becomes less and less dependent on oil," he said.

Not leaving aside the main pillar of his governance, João Lourenço defined the fight against corruption and impunity as one of the priorities, calling on society and institutions to prevent and combat this phenomenon, thus regaining investor confidence.
The exchange rate policy, PRODESI and PROPRIV, and the implementation of PPPs were also discussed.

With regard to economic diversification, the PR highlighted the country's "enormous potential in natural resources, which is still little explored" in areas such as agriculture, the extractive and manufacturing industry, fisheries, tourism, energy and water, transport and logistics, civil construction, among other sectors.

"Therefore, we invite the private sector here to embrace the business opportunities that our country offers, in making agricultural investments, in fisheries, installation of various factories, in the construction and recovery of infrastructure such as roads, bridges, hydroelectric plants, distribution of electricity and piped water, ports, airports, tourist resorts, educational establishments and hospital units that help us transform Angola into a prosperous and modern country, capable of providing its people and the world with the best living conditions " , he stated.

Moving on to education, João Lourenço did not hesitate to affirm that "youth is the greatest asset of Angola", thus highlighting the importance placed on investments in this sector.

Regarding the business environment, the PR guaranteed incentives and made its position clear: "I give foreign investors the guarantee that the business environment in Angola tends to improve day after day (...) If any legislation has to be changed or produced from scratch to facilitate the business environment, let's do it. "

The post-covid recovery effort was also one of the questions asked by the moderator, to which João Lourenço replied that the priority will be "making up for lost time" during the pandemic period.
