André Moda spoke this Wednesday, from Luanda, at the 26th session of the Forestry Committee (COFO26) of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) which started this Wednesday in Rome, Italy, until Friday.
The official also said that the tree planting project, which also aims to minimize the effects of the drought "which rigorously threatens the region", aims to plant one billion trees by 2030.
Speaking to the Lusa agency, André Moda pointed out that a test is already taking place in Luanda, the country's capital, in the Ramiros area, and in the municipality of Bibala, province of Namibe, within a month to start the first phase of the campaign in the province of Huíla, with the goal of planting 700 trees.
According to the Secretary of State for Forests, the tree plantation massification program covers, in addition to Huíla, the provinces of Cunene, Namibe and Benguela, for a period that runs until 2025, with the collaboration of the non-governmental organization Ochiva.
In his speech, André Moda stressed that Angola is committed to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), having developed several political and legislative actions, ranging from the approval of a forestry policy and various technical and legal instruments, highlighting the Basic Law on Forests and Wildlife.
The Secretary of State for Forests also highlighted the National Forestry Inventory, which had the technical and financial support of FAO, the Program for the Prevention and Combat of Forest Fires and Burns and the Integrated Management Program for Miombo Forest Ecosystems among the actions of the Government.
COFO26 takes place with the aim of providing a platform for exchange and dialogue between participants and providing strategic direction for FAO's future work in forestry.
