Former PR adviser criticizes military on the street and devalues the risk of “bloodbath”

The former adviser to the President, Fernando Pacheco, this Thursday devalued the risk of a "bloodbath" after the elections, invoked by the opposition not to carry out street actions, but criticized the presence of the military in the street.

:

"In general, political actors have always expressed that, whatever the outcome, the desire for peace was sincere and mutual", so "I understand that the president of UNITA (National Union for the Total Independence of Angola) was worried about the fact that there are fringes of society demanding more radical positions", he told Lusa.

The former member of the Council of the Republic, during João Lourenço's first term, considered, however, that he never understood the considerable presence of Angolan Armed Forces (FAA) in the streets, after the elections.

"I can understand the presence of the police, but I can no longer understand the presence of the military on the street, I think there was a wrong positioning on the part of the FAA and possibly of those who run the FAA", he underlined.

The president of the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA) said last Saturday that "the price of power is not worth everything, it is not worth the bloodbath of the people", in response to those who intended to see the party on the street to conquer institutions.

Adalberto Costa Júnior, who was speaking at the end of a march promoted, in Luanda, by his party, in favor of "hope, freedom and non-partisanship of institutions", said that the "people know who won the elections".

The president of UNITA said that his party and partners were pressured to take to the streets to conquer the institutions, after the official publication of the results of the elections, which gave victory to the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA).

However, activist Osvaldo Caholo considers that UNITA's "fear" of going out into the streets after the elections, to "avoid a bloodbath, a possible insurrection or civil disobedience", translates into "connivance" with the suffering of Angolans.

"When Adalberto Costa Júnior says that the reach of power should not be worth a bloodbath of his people, in fact he is meaning that the MPLA will never leave power, because in 2027 the MPLA will rig the elections again", he said to Lusa.

"It reveals cowardice and also wakes up the people that UNITA will never do anything to reverse the situation and it is simply the people, if the reach of political power is not worth a bloodbath in 2027 the MPLA will put the troops on the street again", stressed.

For the well-known activist of the 15+2 process, from the era of José Eduardo dos Santos, UNITA and its leader show that they are colluding with the country's mismanagement.

"That takes lives, that is to say, you don't agree with a bloodbath of the kind of civil disobedience, but you agree with bloodbath as a result of state terrorism, that is, mismanagement. How many people enter the cemeteries? cemeteries receive about 100 coffins a day", he criticized.

Caholo, added: "The Angolan people must realize that the MPLA pretends to be a democrat, the opposition pretends to be opposition and the only thing that is not pretending is the suffering of the people".

On the other hand, Fernando Pacheco, a well-known Angolan agronomist and civil society actor, valued UNITA's presence in parliament, where it elected 90 deputies, and in the Council of the Republic, considering that the decision was the right one.

"But I think that the integration of UNITA was healthy, insofar as it prevents us from entering a political crisis, I believe that in this aspect, UNITA did what it should have done", he noted.

The parliament "is an important space for political struggle", observed Fernando Pacheco, regretting that, over the years, this has not always happened, mainly due to "lack of a democratic culture developed in our country".

According to the also member of the Political and Social Observatory of Angola (OPSA), the country needs to have other spaces for political struggle, not only in parliament or on the street, but above all in the media, "which still does not fulfill its role".

"Unfortunately, in our country, as a result of this democratic deficit that we still have, the media does not fulfill its role, it does not develop activities that allow for contradictory, debate, exchange of ideas, this is a struggle that all political and of the country must maintain", he defended.

Pacheco also welcomed some improvement, which he said he noticed in the media, especially public ones, which "promote some debates", admitted that the new government mandate will face difficult times and also regretted the low level of diversification of the economy and the high level of unemployment.

"We need, not only good projects, but the ability to implement these projects and unfortunately we continue to hear that we are going to do projects and when we talk about projects, we mainly talk about concrete, and I hear very little about improvement and reinforcement institutional capacities", he concluded.
