UNITA accuses MPLA of carrying out a “billion dollar” campaign and calls for investigations

UNITA this Tuesday accused the MPLA of carrying out a “billion dollar” electoral campaign, where it “spends funds in a disorderly manner”, and asked the judicial bodies for an investigation, having again refused the alleged financing of corrupt people.

:

"We are not the ones who have huge amounts to spend on the electoral campaign. On the contrary, public opinion knows that whoever is carrying out a billionaire campaign, full of propaganda, through various vehicles, wasting lots of money is the party still in power", said the director general of the UNITA electoral campaign, Lukamba Paulo "Gato".

The politician from the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA), who was speaking at a press conference in Luanda, considered that the MPLA (Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola) and its candidate are spending money in a "disorderly way".

"In fact, this disorderly way of spending funds for an unlimited campaign should arouse the interest of the State inspection bodies to appoint the representative of João Lourenço's candidacy and his supporters to present the campaign's accounts, incorporating all the costs and justify its provenance", he defended.

UNITA, which was taking stock of the three weeks of the electoral campaign, aiming for the 24th of August scrutiny, once again refused to be financed by the "marimbondos" (a species of wasp that has become synonymous with corrupt).

The President of the Republic and MPLA candidate for the elections, João Lourenço, reaffirmed, last week, the fight against corruption and accused UNITA of making pacts with corrupt people.

"Angola is effectively fighting corruption", said João Lourenço at a rally in Malanje, considering it "ironic" that some of its competitors say that the MPLA "is not doing anything".

"What is ironic is that those who defend this point of view have made a pact with the corrupt, they are eating from the plate of the corrupt, they are being financed by the money coming out of Angola through the door of corruption, these are its real financiers", underlined Lourenço, insinuating that the candidacy of the president of UNITA will be financed by people targeted by Angolan justice.

"We don't have to be surprised in terms of alliances, this opposition has had worse alliances than these, whoever allied with 'apartheid' is no surprise that those who emptied the state coffers and took these resources to other economies are allied, who allies with 'apartheid' [South Africa supported UNITA in the civil war, while the MPLA was supported by the Soviet Union and Cuba] easily allies itself with the corrupt who fled Angola accused of practicing corruption", he pointed out.

Lukamba Paulo devalued the accusations, classifying them as a "campaign that aims to stop the large and growing movement of adhesion to Adalberto Costa Júnior and UNITA".

"Even because, it is clear that our campaign has struggled with scarcity of resources, to the point of not having used expensive means and vehicles, disseminating its electoral message through conferences, marches, rallies and airtime", he argued.

The director-general of UNITA's electoral campaign also spoke of "various irregularities" in the electoral process, namely the inclusion of dead citizens in the voters' list, the displacement of voters and the non-disclosure of voters' lists and the lack of electoral rolls.

For the fifth general elections in the history of Angola, scheduled for 24 August, eight political groups compete, which by this time are running through the 18 provinces in the electoral campaign.
