The daughter of José Eduardo dos Santos hired the services of Carmen Varela, Advogados de Família and Molins Defesa Penal to represent her, arguing that the former head of state is not taking the care they consider to be adequate.
In a statement sent to the Lusa agency on behalf of the family, on Friday, the family wrote that "on June 23, 2022, in Barcelona (Spain), engineer José Eduardo dos Santos suffered a cardiorespiratory arrest" and, "after having been rescued by a medical team, he was taken to a hospital in that city, having been admitted to the intensive care unit", explain the children.
The medical team that "accompanies engineer José Eduardo dos Santos continues to monitor his health status and the neurological complications that resulted from the cardiorespiratory arrest", having been "carrying out additional tests, his clinical condition being critical and delicate", says the note.
The "family continues to monitor, permanently, the entire evolution of the health status of engineer José Eduardo dos Santos, together with the medical team" and thanks "all the messages of affection, support and prayers that it has received".
However, "requests that, in this difficult time, that his privacy be respected", reads the statement, which was distributed a day after the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Téte António, visited the health unit in Barcelona.
José Eduardo dos Santos, 79, is the father of eight children with five wives and has been at the forefront of Angola's destiny for 38 years.
The former President is in intensive care at the Teknon Medical Center in Barcelona, Spain, in an induced coma.
The former president has had health problems for several years and has been accompanied in Barcelona since 2006.
Eduardo dos Santos ruled Angola between 1979 and 2017, having been one of the longest-serving Presidents in the world and was regularly accused by international organizations of corruption and nepotism.
In 2017, he resigned from re-candidate and the current President, João Lourenço, succeeded him in office, having also been elected by the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA), which has governed the country since independence from Portugal in 1975.
