Last day of national mourning this Friday

A week after the death of José Eduardo dos Santos, and following the decree of the President of the Republic of seven days of national mourning, the country celebrates this Friday the last day of mourning in memory of the former President.

This period started at 00:00 on Saturday, July 9th, and ended at the end of this Friday. For seven days the national flag was flown at half mast and all shows and public demonstrations were cancelled.

The tribute to the former Head of State was justified by João Lourenço himself in the Presidential Decree that imposed national mourning. The PR considered José Eduardo dos Santos as "a unique figure of the Angolan homeland, to which he dedicated himself from a very early age, having had a relevant participation in the fight against colonization, in the conquest of National Independence, in the consolidation of the Angolan Nation, in his affirmation in the context of Nations, in the achievement of peace and national reconstruction and reconciliation".

In the context of the death of the former President, and still with the uncertainty experienced with regard to the funeral, the Government created public spaces in the 18 provinces of the country for homage and presentation of condolences.

In Luanda, at Praça da República, since Monday, hundreds of citizens, political, diplomatic, ecclesiastical and other entities have passed by the memorial to remember the achievements of JES in favor of Angola.

João Lourenço was present at the "opening" of this place, paying tribute and writing in the book of condolences. He was followed by deputies, magistrates, civil society, members of political parties and foreign diplomats residing in Angola, says Angop.

It is recalled that former President José Eduardo dos Santos died at the age of 79, in Barcelona, ​​after a prolonged illness. He ruled Angola from 1979 to 2017, being replaced by the current President of the Republic, João Lourenço.
