Ambassador in Lisbon estimates “few hundred” of Angolans held in Portugal

The Angolan ambassador in Lisbon estimated this Monday at "a few hundred" Angolans held in Portugal due to the covid-19 and who want to return to the country, adding that they are working on solutions for their repatriation.

:

"It is a very large number of people who want to return. There is the accumulation of time when there were no flights and people who had scheduled flights and who did not leave and the number of people who wish to return to the country is already in the hundreds", said Carlos Alberto Fonseca.

The diplomat was speaking to journalists on the sidelines of the official start-up at the new fixed post to collect biometric data for the identity card opened at the Angolan consulate in Lisbon.

"There are people who are concerned and who naturally want to return, but all this depends on the real possibility of being able to satisfy that need", he considered.

Adding that the Angolan authorities are working on solutions for these citizens, Carlos Alberto Fonseca pointed out, however, that the "epidemic control of the pandemic follows strategies that are often not compatible with simple repatriation when, for repatriation, it is necessary to take additional steps ".

For this reason, he pointed out, the prospects for the community's return needs to be met "are in line with the current epidemic outbreak".

"The peak has been reached and measures are being mitigated. As they are mitigated, the easier the displacements become. This follows a process not only here, but also in our country. Conditions must be created at the point of departure, as at the point of arrival and during the period of movement of people ", he said.

Excusing to advance details about the concrete impacts of the covid-19 pandemic, both in terms of infections and socio-economic effects, in the Angolan community, Carlos Alberto Fonseca assured that the embassy is attentive and provides the necessary "institutional support" .

This pandemic has created very difficult situations for everyone around the world and our embassy and consulates have been providing institutional support to our citizens, "he said.

Angola registers 88 confirmed cases of covid-19 and four dead.

It is estimated that 40,000 Angolans live in Portugal, an estimate that the embassy believes "to sin by default".
