Computer experts in Portuguese-speaking parliaments see cybersecurity as “priorities of priorities”

Cybersecurity was considered the “priority of priorities” for the IT staff of Portuguese-speaking countries, who are meeting in the city of Praia to discuss the challenges and opportunities in this sector.

"We want to increase the exchange of experiences, especially with regard to cybersecurity", the secretary general of the National Assembly of Cape Verde, Paula Lima, who chairs the Association of Secretaries-General of Portuguese-speaking Parliaments (ASG-PLP) told Lusa. ).

The IT staff of this Portuguese-speaking association have been meeting since Tuesday, in the city of Praia, to highlight the challenges and opportunities of information and communication technologies (ICT) in parliamentary administration in times of crisis.

The association official recalled that we are coming out of a pandemic, health, economic and social crisis, during which the weight of ICT was verified, which allowed parliaments not to stop.
She also noted that the war in Ukraine is ongoing, which will also force parliaments to increase their exchanges of experiences, in order to improve parliamentary dynamics.

However, she warned that all this brings "other risks", so she considered cybersecurity to be a major concern and the "priority of priorities".

Another subject discussed at the meeting, which ended this Wednesday, is the storage of data in a cloud system, in which, according to Paula Lima, parliaments have "some deficit", understanding that they need improve.

"Therefore, nothing better than exchanging experiences, investing in our human capital in order to have a better performance", he said, advancing that another topic discussed is teleworking, which employees were not very used to before the covid-19 pandemic. .

"It is in this sense that we are seeing a way to take advantage of this new dynamic, not necessarily in a pandemic situation, but why not for certain services and this brings other benefits in terms of productivity", she stressed.

The issue of dematerialization is also being discussed, progressively leaving paper and making use of technologies to better store all parliamentary documentation, for access to services and in good time for citizens.

The XVI Meeting of Computer Staff of the Association of Secretaries-General of Portuguese-Speaking Parliaments (ASG-PLP) precedes the XXII Meeting of Secretaries-General of Portuguese-speaking Parliaments (ASG-PLP), which starts on Thursday, also in the city of Praia.

This meeting will take place under the motto "New Paradigms for the Management of Parliaments in Times of Crisis", it takes place at a time when Cape Verde assumes the pro-tempore presidency, and aims to promote the development of technical-parliamentary cooperation between Portuguese-speaking countries. as well as contributing to the modernization of parliamentary institutions.

The (ASG-PLP) established in 1998 and is made up of the secretaries-general or equivalent positions of the parliaments of the republics of Angola, Cape Verde, Mozambique, Portugal and São Tomé and Príncipe, Timor-Leste, the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies of Equatorial Guinea. , Chamber of Deputies of the Federal Republic of Brazil and Guinea-Bissau.
