Pepetela: Chivukuvuku “is a good candidate” to face PR

The writer Pepetela considered that President João Lourenço should win the next elections, but with a reduced margin on the opposition, considering that Abel Chivukuvuku "is a good candidate" and a threat.

In an interview with Lusa in Lisbon, the writer points out that the greatest risk to the hegemony of the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) comes from Abel Chivukuvuku, the founding politician of the CASA-CE party (Convergência Wide de Salvação de Angola - Electoral Coalition) and who was a leader for years in the Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA).

For the author of works such as "Utopia" "The wish of Kianda", "Jaime Bunda", among many other books, and winner of several literary awards, the President of Angola, João Lourenço, "may win" the next elections in the country , but not with the margin that won the previous ones, in 2018.

"That certainly is. It will almost come close to a draw. It is the perception you can have," he said.

"Abel Chivukuvuku, which is a name that is in all heads, how will this be resolved. Because he is a good candidate, he has support and above all he manages to move youth," said the writer, admitting that this candidate "can be "a threat to João Lourenço.

"Now, it can also happen that he divides the opposition's votes and, therefore, works the other way around," he stressed.

As for Isabel dos Santos, daughter of ex-President José Eduardo dos Santos, being able to present herself as a candidate, Pepetela limited herself to saying: "I don't believe much, first because she never had any political activity, she has no experience for that, she has , to have always been with her father and to always learn at home, but to present herself as a candidate I do not think she has and I do not believe very much that she has this desire ".

This week, the writer received the dstangola / Camões literary prize from the hands of the Portuguese Prime Minister, António Costa, at a ceremony at the Centro Cultural de Belém in Lisbon that marked the World Day of the Portuguese Language, May 5, where he gave an interview to Lusa .

The prize was awarded to him for his most recent book "His Excellency, of Corpo Present".
