Pepetela receives dstangola / Camões award from the hands of the Portuguese Prime Minister

The writer Pepetela, who received this Wednesday, in Lisbon, the literary prize dstangola / Camões, warned of the need for global responses to interconnected problems, such as those suffered by the culture sector since last year because of the pandemic.

:

"The culture sector has suffered very adverse circumstances since the beginning of last year and it is likely that there will be repercussions that are difficult to overcome in the near future," said Pepetela, after receiving the prize from the hands of the Prime Minister, António Costa, in the session ceremony of the World Day of the Portuguese Language, which took place at the Centro Cultural de Belém, in Lisbon.

The writer appealed to "all countries in the world, without exceptions", to venture into "this generalization of thought on such interconnected problems". "No more particularities, shelter bags and creative imbalances," he stressed.

For the writer, "everything is connected, and national and regional egoisms end up having repercussions in the global thrown with added strength".

The author of many works, including "His Excellency, of Corpo Presente", with which he won the literary prize dstangola / Camões, considered that "it may be too early for ordinary people to realize that the world has changed". "However, mindsets will also be forced to follow the current," he added.

The writer stressed that what "several artists have painted, written or composed before, and for this reason their genius was considered to be peculiar to eccentrics or lunatics, today it starts to seem like the inevitable new world, in which none of what was safe yesterday the is from now on ".

Pepetela thanked the prize that, "by a happy coincidence", was given to her on May 5, "such an important date for the Portuguese language", underlining the fact that there are rare literature awards created and maintained by private companies, like this one that it was assigned, expressing the desire to continue and serve as an example.

The session, chaired by Portuguese Prime Minister António Costa, who presented the prize to the writer, also counted on the intervention of the Minister of State and Foreign Affairs of Portugal, Augusto Santos Silva, and the executive secretary of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries ( CPLP), Ambassador Francisco Ribeiro Telles.

The session also included video messages from the UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, and the President of the Republic of Cape Verde, a country that holds the rotating presidency of the CPLP, as well as the President of the Portuguese Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.

The prize given to Pepetela was instituted by dstgroup in partnership with Camões - Institute of Cooperation and Language, which aims to distinguish, annually and in an alternate way, books edited in poetry and prose by artists born in Angola.

World Portuguese Language Day was instituted in November 2019, during the 40th session of the General Conference of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

The national program of celebrations includes initiatives in Portugal, promoted by the areas of Foreign Affairs, Culture, Science, Technology and Higher Education and Education, as well as more than 150 activities in 44 countries, namely those that are part of the CPLP.
