The act took place this Monday morning at the Government Palace, and is part of the commemorations of the International Day for Monuments and Sites, which celebrate this Monday.
Considered a historic building, the Palácio da Cidade Alta currently operates as the work place of the head of state.
However, this infrastructure has a rich history, highlighting the fact that it was the first seat of the independent government and that, from 1979 onwards, it housed the remains of the country's first President, Agostinho Neto, writes Angop.
The building housed all the tributes paid to Agostinho Neto until 1991, when the mortal remains of the founder of the Nation were placed in the currently the Dr. Antonio Agostinho Neto.
According to Angop, its works took place between 1607 and 1611. In 1761, the palace was almost entirely destroyed and later rebuilt in the Pombaline style. Between 1940 and 1950, the architect Fernando Batalha, at the service of the National Monuments Commission, was responsible for restructuring the palace, to which the arcade and pediment were added.
Taking into account these and other elements of the building's history, the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Environment decided to classify it, by means of an order, as cultural heritage, writes Angop.
