Country plans to certify airports in Catumbela and Huíla within the next two years

José Tavares Venâncio, chairman of the Board of Directors (PCA) of Sociedade Gestora dos Aeroportos (SGA), announced that the country plans to certify two airports in the next two years. These are the international airports of Catumbela (Benguela) and Huíla.

With regard to Catumbela airport, the official made it known that it is in the process of being modernised.

Speaking to Angop, José Tavares Venâncio said that there are still "some investments to be made", from the point of view of "technical capacity", as well as "a set of other procedures to be completed", which is why the certification has not yet gone ahead. "There are still some investments to be made, from the point of view of technical capacity and also a set of other procedures to be completed, hence the reason for not having yet been certified", he said, quoted by Angop.

Thus, he also took the opportunity to explain that the certification of an airport is not an administrative action, but a technical one, requiring, along with other skills, the capacity of the infrastructure to be able to serve, without operational risk, its users, writes Angop.

Speaking within the scope of the swearing-in ceremony of the new management members of companies under the responsibility of the Ministry of Transport, the official referred that – in addition to the challenge of airport certification, as well as airport easements –, in his mandate, he has of an uninterrupted agenda to improve the conditions, in terms of quality and comfort of the travellers, as well as the technical qualification of the workers, writes Angop.

The Minister of Transport, Ricardo D'Abreu, who headed the ceremony, said, quoted by Angop, that the changes in the administration aim to "increase the contribution of the transport sector to Angola's economic growth and boost the attraction of national private investment and foreigner".

It should be recalled that in January of this year, the Minister of Transport admitted the possibility of Catumbela International Airport being certified this year, having indicated the third quarter of 2023 as a possible deadline for certification.
