Employees of Angola Telecom protest on Saturday against “arbitrary decisions” by employers

Workers at Angola Telecom, a state-owned telecommunications company, march on Saturday in Luanda in protest against the “compulsory transfers” of workers who joined the strike in 2022 and “arbitrary decisions” by the administration, a union source announced.

The Union of Postal, Telecommunications and Related Workers of Luanda (STCTAL) refers, in a statement to which Lusa had access, that the march scheduled for Saturday arises as a result of several breaches by employers.

According to STCTAL, five months after the suspension of the strike at Angola Telecom, workers continue to register "several concerns", including "illegal suspensions and discounts", especially for employees who joined the strike.

The union entity lists, in the note, seven main reasons that justify Saturday's march, namely the "compulsive transfer" to other areas as interns, for four months, of the majority of workers who joined the strike.

"And throughout this arbitrary process characterized by successive violations of the law and the Constitution, the workers are concerned about what the future will be like" after the internship, refers in the statement.

The "compulsory retirement" of two female employees, the readmission of nine of the 11 workers notified for contract termination, which for STCTAL "violates the principle of equality", and the transfer of members of the union commission, "without prior notification", are included also among the reasons for the march.

The union also says that, to date, the employer has refused to receive the negotiating commission to continue discussing and implementing the points in the list of claims.

Salary increase in the order of 50 percent, update of the food subsidy in the order of 5000 kwanzas and better working conditions are among the points in the list of demands.

Angola Telecom "has not paid the union, up to the present date", the quotas referring to the months of January and between June and December 2022 and January and February 2023, adds the statement.

Lourenço Francisco Afonso, general secretary of STCTAL, told Lusa that all authorities have already been informed about the march, which should start at Rua 1.º Congresso do MPLA, go along Avenida 4 de Fevereiro to the headquarters of Angola Telecom.
