Valdomiro Dondo ready to enter telecommunications: “I want to invest in Africell or in another company”

With businesses in the transport, real estate, banking, mining, health, restaurant, beverage, pastry and information technology sectors, the Brazilian-Angolan businessman, who has been in Angola for 35 years, says he is now prepared to invest in a new area: the of telecommunications.

In an exclusive interview with Expansão, the businessman clarified that he is not linked to Africell, "a publicly traded company", but confirms a "friendship" with the "owner", thus justifying his presence at the telecommunications company's presentation event to the Angolan market.

Valdomiro Dondo, who in the last three decades has invested more than US$500 million in Angola, still rejects having been one of Africell's financiers for its entry into the country. However, he leaves his participation in the company open: "I didn't participate in anything, now I can say that one day, if Africell opens up this possibility, I intend to invest in that company or another in the same sector", he reiterated.

The businessman also considered, in the same interview with Expansão, that access to technology will be fundamental for the country's success, stating that this is "the sector of the future". "I want to invest in Africell or in any other telecommunications company", he reinforced, stating that he no longer thinks about mobile telephony because it is no longer a "good deal", taking into account that voice is practically no longer used. "What is desirable in telecommunications is the whole, optical fiber and infrastructure. In Angola we will need a lot of infrastructure", he highlights.

On the fact that he has never invested in this area of business, he explains that investments amount to hundreds of millions of dollars and that there is an infrastructure sharing law that does not work. "On the day the law is complied with, we will have a rush of outside investors, big investors. Today Africell is creating its own infrastructure, Movicel already has its own, Unitel too, but that is not justifies it and all over the world this is not how it works", he says.

In relation to Gemcorp, Valdomiro claimed to be the financier of some of his projects, considering they have "a good relationship", saying that he is "raising awareness of them to invest more in the country".

Valdomiro Dondo, who previously said he had already invested US$500 million in the country, arrived in Angola 35 years ago from São Paulo, Brazil. He owns the Macon carrier, which has the largest fleet of buses in the country and has recently expanded its operations to neighboring Namibia and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
