European Parliament debates money laundering in the EU after 'Luanda Leaks' revelations

The European Parliament will debate, on Wednesday, the revelations of the financial schemes of businesswoman Isabel dos Santos, the ‘Luanda Leaks’, in the context of a debate on money laundering in the European Union (EU), was announced.

:

European sources told the Lusa agency that, at this morning's meeting of the conference of presidents of the European Parliament, it was approved to carry out a "state of play of the fight against money laundering in the EU in the light of the revelations of 'Luanda Leaks'".

The debate will take place on Wednesday at the end of the day and should last about an hour and a half, the same sources said.

This week, the European parliamentary benches of the Greens and the United Left (GUE / NGL) called for a debate on this case for the next plenary session of the European assembly, which takes place in the French city of Strasbourg between Monday and Thursday.

These requests had a 'green light', with some changes, at the conference of presidents of the European Parliament, with the support of most of the political families represented there, including the two largest, the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats (S&D) and the Party European People's Party (PPE).

It was decided, then, that a resolution will not be adopted - that is, a position taken by the European Parliament - just a discussion among MEPs.

Like what normally happens in debates held in plenary, this will have initial statements by the European Council and the European Commission, which have not yet commented on the 'Luanda Leaks', European sources told Lusa.

Initially, European Greens and GUE / NGL requested a debate centered on the case of 'Luanda Leaks', but the title and content of the discussion generated some apprehension in S&D and PPE, which is why it was decided to proceed with a more general assessment on money laundering in the EU, with MEPs who intervene to address this specific case.
