João Lourenço guest of honor on Independence Day in Cape Verde

The President of the Republic will be the guest of honor for Cape Verde's Independence Day celebrations, on July 5, announced the Cape Verdean head of state in Addis Ababa.

Jorge Carlos Fonseca was speaking at the end of a meeting with the Angolan counterpart on the sidelines of the African Union (AU) summit.

"We spoke essentially of the State visit that President João Lourenço will make to Cape Verde in July, probably on the 3rd and 4th of July, and he will also be the special guest personality for the official celebrations of the 45th anniversary of the Independence of Cape Verde", said Jorge Carlos Fonseca.

The Cape Verdean President, who is also acting president of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP), also revealed that he discussed with João Lourenço the holding of the next summit of heads of state and government of the Lusophone organization, scheduled for 2 and 3 de Setembro, in Luanda.

"We talked about the great expectation that there is at that summit the signing of the decisive community integration agreement, the mobility agreement", he said.

Jorge Carlos Fonseca said that the political situation and the post-electoral dispute in Guinea-Bissau were not an issue between the two presidents, who centered the conversation on bilateral relations and the CPLP.

President João Lourenço did not speak to journalists at the end of the meeting, having already left Addis Ababa.

João Lourenço and Jorge Carlos Fonseca were the only Portuguese-speaking heads of state present at the AU summit, with the rest of the countries being represented at the level of prime minister and foreign affairs ministers.

During the proceedings, Jorge Carlos Fonseca made an intervention on the theme of the summit, "Silence Arms: Creating Favorable Conditions for Africa's Development", considering that more than "an important proposition that should guide the interventions of all Member States members "must be understood" as a powerful echo of the millions "who on the continent" cry out for the right to a decent life that is slow to arrive despite, paradoxically, being within reach of our possibilities".

"Honestly and sincerely, it is urgent to move from words to action and to ignore that, often, the breeding ground for the proliferation of some of the evils that afflict us, such as terrorism, different forms of violence and trafficking, feeds on policies of exclusion, authoritarianism, cultural or religious intolerance", he maintained.
